Jiu Jitsu has become really popular to many students and even some teachers. Jiu Jitsu is a self defense sport, but there’s much more than just that.
“Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that teaches self defense, discipline, respect, humbleness, and honor” said [sophomore] Colin Flood, who has been practicing the sport for 10 years.
Fourth degree Black Belt Juliano Coutinho, the owner of Daniel Gracie Academy in Hyannis has been teaching since 2005 and has been the owner of Daniel Gracie Academy for 10 years.
“ It was a gift from God to give him the ability to teach and change so many people’s lives with just a singular sport,” said Coutinho.
Daniel Gracie Academy is a family friendly area and is very welcoming. So many different people with different backgrounds but as soon as they step inside the academy everyone is family. No one is better than another, everyone is equal. Said both Flood and Nascimento.
Jiu Jitsu is a physical combat sport but,as [8TH grader] Abner Nascimento said “Jiu Jitsu is fair because you can be a smaller and not so strong of a person, but with the right technique you can beat someone bigger and stronger than you.”
Jiu Jitsu also helps with real life problems. It teaches you how to have self emotion control, and to deal with things without using unnecessary emotions, Coutinho said.
“ Jiu Jitsu teaches people how to deal with adversity and difficulties. There’s going to be many moments in life where things might not go your way or things happen, which will cause you to want to use emotions that could make it worse for you. That’s when Jiu Jitsu comes into action and teaches you how to deal with it and stay calm in those situations,” said Coutinho.
In Jiu Jitsu there are people who do it as a hobby, but there are people who compete as well. There are competitions all over the world. Childrenfrom the ages of 4 start competing and even people who are above the age of 65.
“ Going to competitions is the perfect way to show my skills to other people and to myself, “ said Flood. There are over 3 million people in the world who practice the sport Jiu Jitsu.
As Coutinho said “ Jiu Jitsu is for everyone and it wouldn’t hurt to try.”
