This weekend, and next, students, staff and parents will have the chance to experience a magical retelling of the classic tale “The Little Mermaid” as the Drama club’s spring musical. This enchanting tale, written by Hans Christian Andersen, has been created for the audience to dive deep into the underwater kingdom. Leading the play are seniors Martina Ibarra Suarez and Keely Touhey, who take on the iconic role of Ariel, a spirited young mermaid who dreams of life on land.
Ibarra Suarez has been dreaming of this role since she was a little girl. “She’s my favorite Disney princess, I’m so grateful that I get to play her at my last show,” Ibarra Suarez said. “Her bravery and courage is very inspiring and I really respect that.”
Juniors Brady Kundel and Harry McElhattan, take on the love interest of Ariel; Prince Eric, with their charming personalities. “The most important theme in this story is to follow your dreams and passions, ” said Kundel. “Prince Eric has a lot of responsibilities, and even with that he still follows his dreams by being a sailor.”

The story unfolds as Ariel makes a daring deal with the sea witch Ursula played by Trineice Clegg and Delilah DeYoung, trading her voice for a pair of legs to pursue her love for Prince Eric. This bold decision sets off a chain of events that challenges Ariel’s courage and determination.
“Ursula is described as ‘a creature who has larger than life confidence,’ and I do struggle with that a lot”, said Clegg. “But I just have to remember that when I’m on stage I don’t have to be vulnerable, I can play Ursula.”
The play features stunning visuals and captivating music that brings life to iconic songs such as: “Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea”. The audience will be treated to vibrant costumes and detailed set designs that transport them to a fantastical underwater world filled with colorful sea creatures and breathtaking landscapes.
“We just want from the moment you walk into the auditorium to feel that you are in a whole different space,” said Mary Barth, head director of the drama club.
As the story progresses, themes of love, sacrifice, and the quest for identity resonate throughout the show. Ariel’s journey is not just about her desire to be with Prince Eric; it also highlights her struggle to find her own voice and place in the world.
“She is a teenager who just wants to explore and discover the world for herself, and I really relate to that, especially now that I’m looking to graduate high school,” said Ibarra Suarez.
The supporting cast features a talented group of students, including Clara Nunes and Lylah Crawley playing F
lounder, and Xavi Villejo playing Sebastian the Crab.
“The most important theme in The Little Mermaid is that no matter who you are, there is a place for you in this world,” said Villejo. “Sebastian sometimes serves as a tribulation and he gets upset when things don’t go the right way, but then at the end he learns to accept it a bit more.”
The play digs into the complexities of relationships, as Ariel navigates her feelings for Eric, her loyalty to her family, and the manipulative nature of Ursula.
The talented cast, including many skilled singers, orchestra, and dancers who will be seen performing in their heelys, will bring energy and emotions to their performances, making sure that each moment on stage is both entertaining and heartfelt.
“You will be surprised, amazed and in awe at all of our voices and talent, ” said Barth.

Rehearsal preparations for this show is four days a week in the beginning then five days a week as they get closer to the show. “Rehearsals are separated into dance, vocal, and staging to work on the technicalities to make open night perfect,” said Barth.
Behind the scenes, the creative team has worked dedicatedly to bring this magical producti
on to life. Stage manager Audrey Gonzalez, costume designers, lighting manager Roan Cammarano, choreographer Brooke Styche, and av tech Stephen Reynolds, have all worked together to create the wonders of this show.
As the premiere date approaches, excitement is building among the performers and everyone planning on attending the play. “The opening night is the best because they’re nervous, their energies are through the roof, and it’s their first time performing in front of a live audience,” said Barth.
