Barnstable’s Boys Golf team has had nothing short of a successful and memorable season. Last year the team had more losses than wins, forcing the team to give up on their hopes of qualifying for sectionals. With the retirement of the team’s long-standing coach Mark Titus, a new beginning was brought to the team with Coach Trevor Kenney.
Senior captain and Babson golf commit Chad Tordone credits the team’s success this season on, “consistency from all eight players in the lineup, and everyone giving his full effort.”
Tordone also said the team’s 14-4 record is due to Coach Kenney’s leadership. Kenney led the team to a major victory over previously undefeated St. John Paul ll late in the season.
“Coach Kenney created a better environment for the team,” Tordone said.
On Monday, Oct. 23, the golf team will head to Easton Country Club for Division 1 Sectionals, but they will be missing their number two player, Colin Gleason, due to medical reasons. Gleason’s low score of the season was two under par. It will be a challenge to move past sectionals to regionals due to the high level of competition that is expected, but the golf team has been preparing all season.
The regular season ended with a win over Nantucket, led by a 36, even par, shot by Chad Tordone, and a 38, two over par, shot by junior Ryan Woeller. The team’s combined score was 248, while Nantucket shot 252 at Hyannisport Golf Club. Barnstable’s lowest team score this season was 233, which is an average of three over par, against Monomoy at Cranberry Valley. This win was led by Gleason, a sophomore, with his season low, two under par.
This Friday, Oct. 27, senior Chad Tordone, junior Ryan Woeller, and sophomore Brody Nighan will tee off at the Cape and Islands High School Golf Championship 18-hole tournament at Willowbend Country Club in an effort to take home the trophy.
