Margo’s Chic Corner: Winter Fashion

Margo Silliman, Staff Writer

Winter is a season that tends to either put fashion on the backburner or set it in motion for the rest of the year. Do you want to give in to seasonal depression and stay on the comfy side, a solid outfit of leggings, sweatpants, and sweaters everyday?

Or do you want to take advantage of the opportunities cold weather brings? Lower temps mean more clothes, and more options, layering becomes a significant factor in winter fashion.

Appealing to both comfort and style are fleece flannels. Warm, easy, comfortable… but so easy to layer. If you’re worried that the flannel will be too heavy, go for the flannel-under-flannel look. Wearing two flannel shirts means having the ability to be in the snow and have a lighter flannel layer on inside the house. It’s kind of “extra,” being that much more grunge, but in such a good way.

Abandoning comfort, leather pants are making a comeback. They’re not the ideal snow-day attire, but the punk look still has potential. And they’re all the rage in Europe; every other clothing store in Italy has them, and the trend is making its way to the US. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Another aesthetic-before-comfort piece is sheer tops. It may be a little too far past New Years’ to still catch them in outfits, but they were a must-have party item in the new year that will hopefully be implemented in the rest of 2018.

Coming back to comfort and function, DOC Martens are everywhere. They’re a weatherproof boot following the grunge phase, durable but with a trendy vibe. And the company has been making adjustments in style. They’re adding to the popularity of Chelsea Boots, ankle-high booties with an elastic side.

Fringe is starting to show up in many ensembles as well. It goes with the western hippie look, another 70s revival trend. But it’s also changing in how people are wearing it; many students are wearing tassel accessories, from earrings to necklaces.

To top it all off: joggers. The tight-calf sweatpants are a favorite trend for guys this year. Essentially, they’re sweatpants, which is appealing this time of year, when we’d like to come into school in pajamas more than ever. But they’ve been revolutionized over the past few years, and can be found in some fairly high-end styles. Socially acceptable sweatpants… finally.
