Until this year’s successful athletic season, it had been more than 20 years since every fall sport has qualified for the postseason play. “We attribute this to our talented athletes, dedicated coaches, great leadership from the senior class, and also to the strong support of our programs by the BHS community,” wrote Athletics Assistant, Ashley Bishop, in an email to BHS Staff. It’s a milestone that every team strives for said Athletic Director Scott Thomas, “It’s a good measure of a successful season,” he continued.

Boy’s Golf placed fourth in the Division 1 South Championship, and placed third in the Division 1 State Championship on Nov. 6. Placing third overall was a big win for the golf team, six of whom are seniors– it’s the first time in five years the golf team has placed within the top three. They were up against some odds this year, beginning with a rough start and having a tough year, but this only motivated the golfers. Senior Holden Elletson has been playing golf since he was eight years old. He won the Division 1 State title. “It’s really awesome to be back on top,” said Elletson. Standing at the playoff hole, Elletson was intimidated competing against the winner of the South Sectional, but still prevailed. Six of the players are seniors, who have worked extra hard to make their last year memorable.

Girl’s Cross Country won the OCL championships and league meets this season. The talented runners thrived under the direction of captains Kylie Willis, Renee Gruner-Mitchell, Leanne Guimond and Emily Rice.

Seasoned runners like Nick O’Toole and newer additions to the team Charlie Ewald and Connor Brewster helped lead Boy’s Cross Country to victory.

Boy’s Soccer recovered from their last season, winning the OCL title and a game in the Division 1 South Tournament’s first round. Strong offensive play from Senior Devondre Armstrong, effort from Juniors Jac Cordeiro and Malachi Walsh and goalie Evan Nikas lead the team to victory. The commitment of the team made them stronger and lead to a great season.

The talented Girl’s Soccer Team qualified for the MIAA tournament for the first time in sixteen years. Leadership from Seniors Aislin Hempstead, Maddie Brennan and Maggie Murray influenced younger players and contributed to the success of the team. They lost to Bridgewater-Raynham but showed great sportsmanship.

The Field Hockey Team won the OCL title for the first time since 2011. The girls recovered from losses early in the season and were able to become a very unified team. Seniors Mackenzie Curtice and Bella Burbic lead the team. They were ranked as the #12 seed in the Division 1 South Bracket.

The Volleyball Team had a perfect 18-0 season and were ranked as the #1 seed in the Division 1 South Bracket. They lost to Newton North on November 15th so, they will have to wait for their 19th state title. Junior Riley James became the second player to reach the 1000 career kill mark in Barnstable.

The 132nd Thanksgiving game against Falmouth was be hosted by Falmouth this year. The final score was Falmouth 50, Barnstable 32. The football team qualified as the #8 seed in the Division 2 South Bracket but lost to King Philip on October 27th.

The Cheerleading Squad was also successful at the Oliver Ames Competition, placing first in their division. The team advanced to regionals on November 12th and placed seventh.

These successes can be attributed to the hardworking players that make up the teams here at Barnstable. Athletic Director Scott Thomas said, “It’s a pretty amazing sign of overall successful athletic play.” The dedication of players and experience of the coaches helped to keep them competitive through the year. Thomas hopes this high level of competition will continue and that this year’s outstanding results will motivate the athletes next year.
