Who’s That Teacher?

Joe Lennon-Phillips, Staff Writer

Where did you go to college?

Vanderbilt. It even sounds expensive, doesn’t it?

Speaking of college, how many college lanyards do you have?

At last count, I had more than 40. As long as my AP students keep bringing them to me when they tour colleges, I will keep color-coordinating my outfits to match them.

Who is your role model?

My favorite high school teacher, Ms. Stidham. She was eaten by dogs when I was in college so we’ve  fallen out of touch. True story. Look it up.

Have you always wanted to teach in your subject?

No. In high school I failed the first year of this subject.

When did you start teaching at BHS?

I came to BHS in 2006 from California where I taught at a private all-boys school.

Where did you work before that?

I taught in a public school in the South with bullet holes in the windows and metal detectors at the doors. Not the greatest school.

What do you do when you aren’t teaching?

I walk my two pugs and travel to developing countries. I figure I can visit European capitals when I’m in my 80s. I spent 3 weeks in Tanzania this past summer and 8 weeks in Rajasthan the summer before.

Do you play any musical instruments?

Why, yes. I play several quite badly. But I play the banjo most badly.

Do you play any sports?

I disapprove of sports in general, outside of the occasional mountain bike ride.
