Get In Shape For Summer

Linn Krokedal, Staff Writer

Summer is coming up, and with that, beach season. Long, hot days at the beach, means long hours in bikinis, shorts and light clothing. Are you in the right shape for the bikini-season after this long winter? Well if your answer is no, I’m sure you’re not alone in that! But now is a perfect time to start getting in shape. It takes a while to get the perfect summer-bikini body (whatever that is).
When you look yourself in the mirror now, you might not be too happy about what you see; and, after a winter with too much too eat, you’re probaby not alone.
But now as the snow (hopefully) melts, the grass turns green and the leaves slowly start to show up again, you should probably start to think a little bit more about what you eat and how you exercise. I’m not telling you to count calories; because, in my mind, that’s going a bit too far. Just skip the urge to eat at McDonald’s, Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts or whatever fast-food place you like to go and have a salad instead. Eat green to match the spring.
Eating healthier can make a big difference, but pair that with working out and then the abs start to pop. If you’re doing a sport there’s no need to work out too much more than that; but, if you’re not, a couple of runs a week should do it. Maybe check out a “couch to 5k” plan.
In a lot of magazines and on the internet, especially now that summer is approaching, you can read all about “How to get the perfect bikini body in eight weeks,” maybe sometimes it even says six. Though that’s probably unrealistic, they usually have some good recipes and workouts to help become healthier before summer.
If you Google the term “bikini body” and look at the images that pop up, you can see that the term pretty much means a supermodel’s body. This gives young girls some somewhat unachievable, unhealthy goals about what they should want to look like. And, though some people are always talking about getting that perfect body before summer, really as long at it’s a healthy body with a bikini on, it is a “bikini body.” After all, it’s all about feeling comfortable in your own skin.
