In a school filled with creativity Junior Elliott Brown maneges to stand out with his ceramic work. On June 11, 2025 The Scholastic art and writing award is being awarded to Brown, at Carnegie Hall in New York City, for his sweet bear pot. Brown was honored to be able to receive this and said the award shows how scholastic spotlights younger artists in highschool.
This artwork is supposed to symbolize life being full circle. From when the fish goes through the mountains, in the valleys, in the rivers, to when the fish gets to the bear and is eaten. Then the whole cycle begins all over again. It was inspired by Brown’s trips to Montana.
The pot took about a month, accounting for the time in between classes and the wait time to fire the kiln firings. He began with making the pot out of coils, tweaking the shape as it grew taller, and applied black underglaze. Once that dried, he carved his design into the pot, it was then bisque fired. Then he put clear glaze on top and fired it for the final time.
Along with his ceramics work, he also has various paintings and pieces of clothing that he has made. Brown has been doing art since he was a kid but his ceramics work really started during his eighth grade year working on his ceramics work during lunches when he was at Monomoy Regional High school. Brown came to BHS for his junior year and was able to do ceramics and other art classes.
