Joe’s Job Advice
November 8, 2017
There are many options to consider when on the job hunt, for instance, what type of job is most suitable?
I have to say, as someone who has worked in the school year and juggled sports at the same time, it becomes very difficult to keep up with academics, and that is something that had ought to be considered.
In my experience, the restaurant business has shown to be where it’s at. While it requires a lot of running around usually and often can get pretty stressful, it typically ends up paying more in the end because of tips and honestly, who wants a job where they just sit around doing nothing? Well, actually, doing nothing is an important part of the adolescent criteria.
Senior Gap employee Harry McDonald said that retail is where it’s at if you’re looking for a laid back work environment.
“It just gets kind of boring,” he says, “I end up just sitting there for awhile.”
But again, what’s wrong with that?
If you’re willing to work hard, scooping ice cream might be the job for you. Ice cream places, such as Four Seas, Katie’s Homemade Ice Cream, Ben and Jerry’s and Cape Cod Creamery are popular jobs for Red Raiders. If you’re looking for a year-round job, though, it might be best to go in a different direction as most ice cream establishments close for the winter season.
Jobs offer more than monetary gain. For senior William Ruberti, his job has set him up well for the future.
“It has kind of taught me how to work, I didn’t really have any work ethic before I started working at Four Seas. It’s definitely set me up for jobs in the future,” he said.
Four Seas and Ben and Jerry’s respectively even offer scholarships to their employees heading off to college.
The school actually is a very helpful tool when trying to find the right high school job. The school website actually has a career readiness section, under which a job opportunities list is available.
BHS also offers a senior internship program run by Mrs. Eastman, which is very useful in examining work ethic and possible jobs for after high school.
